Details of Water Projects carried out by Friends of Kitui

Use the navigation buttons on the left to see in more detail the type of water project which is typically undertaken by Friends of Kitui.

The paragraphs below tell you more about the four main types of project- Subsurface dams, shallow wells, rock catchments and water storage tanks

In outline, each water project we support will follow this profile:

1. It will be a project proposed by an established community group in Kitui.

2. Each Community Group will have applied to the Diocese Water Department for support and will have passed the Department's review procedures to ensure eligibility and accountability.

3. Group projects will be selected on the basis of their needs and not on their religious affiliation.

4. Projects will involve only simple, sustainable technologies. The per-project budget cost will be in the range €2000 to €5000, and the per-capita cost in the range €10-€155.

5. Each community group will provide 30 to 60% of the total cost in the form of local labour and locally sourced materials.

6. Each project will be inspected on the ground in Kitui by a representative of Friends of Kitui at regular intervals.

Sub-surface dams

Technology that's 3000 years old, now being revived to meet the challenges of recurring droughts. For more  information on SSDs see the Water Issues page. Examples of SSDs support by Friends of Kitui are listed here.

Shallow Wells

Properly constructed wells to replace ad-hoc water holes scooped out of sandy river beds will improve access and yield, and protect water from contamination. For more  information on Shallow Wells see the Water Issues page. Examples of wells support by Friends of Kitui are listed here

Rock catchments

If the nearest water course is too distant, rock catch- ments can capture a high percentage of precipitation/ rainfall and serve as a reservoir. For more  information on Rock Catchments see the Water Issues page.

Storage Tanks

Tanks to store rainwater run-off from roofs of buildings are a most important source of good quality drinking water. Simple technology which can be a life saver- literally.
