| Members of
Friends of Kitui have
made a number of visits to Kitui in 2007, in April, June and November,
and again in May, June and October 2008, to continue monitoring
ongoing projects designed to alleviate the side effects of drought and famine in the Kitui district.
This year we have visited Kitui again early February.
In addition to the Project Programme, we are building a new
St Michael's secondary school in Kitui: with a budget of
approximately €500,000, this project demands intensive
fundraising and project management.
|
We
are continuing our sponsorship of major projects for the Education
of AIDS orphans, for the Empowerment
of Women, for the construction of a
New School, and for the provision of Safe
Water to 24 communities. |
|
Our major focus for 2008/2009 will be in these areas:
-
A continuation of support for
activities at local parish and
community level.,
including extending the "Twinning" concept to other
parishes.
-
Further
expansion of Water Development
Projects. Each project will typically provide a safe water supply for 200-300 people,
and will help bridge times of severe drought.
-
Continuation of
support for Aidan Corless' initiative for the education
of Aids orphans.
-
The
Programme
for Empowering Women, which started with a project to develop a Bee-keeping micro industry in
Kitui, has now been extended to other income-generating
activities.
-
St
Michael's School Building project,
led by Aidan Corless, will continue in 2009. Due to the
global economic downturn, the rate of contribution to this
project has slowed somewhat. We now anticipate completion by
the end of this year (2009), but we do need your continuing support to raise the remainder of the
funds for completion.
-
We
are building a new Primary School for
290 children at Makayauni. Funds are in place for the
first phase- construction of an administration block and four
classrooms- which will go ahead before June 2009. We are
continuing fundraising efforts for Phase 2. Again, your
support is essential to the successful completion of this
project.
