We
believe in sustainable development. This means that our
projects are geared towards empowering our
partners through provision of water, education and
capacity-building to free up their time for productive
activity and to engage in income-generating projects which they will continue to
develop and expand under their own initiative.

Help improve the
status of women in Kitui. |
| To
date, Friends of Kitui have supplied and installed over 200
hives in Kitui. Click HERE for an update on the Honey
Project |
| For generations,
women have borne the greatest burden of famine,
discrimination, and being treated as second class citizens.
Kitui has had a women's programme for over fifteen years with a full time
women's co-ordinator working for the financial, cultural and social
empowerment of all women. As part
of this we now have a micro credit and finance scheme for our women.

Worldwide, more than
two thirds of those living in poverty are women. The
underlying reasons are the status of women, gender issues,
equality- see HERE how Friends
of Kitui helps to address these issues in Kitui
|
| Our dream
- which is now coming true after some hiccups at the
beginning-is to initiate a honey business in each of the 23 parishes
of the Diocese that will be managed, owned and operated for the sole purpose of empowering
women financially. In this way the
women
will have economic power to direct their own lives and have resources to care
for their families. |

Update on Food and Water situation in
Kitui- April 2008
Click
HERE
for a full report
The
average return distance to the water points in the marginal
mixed farming livelihood zone currently ranges from 6 to 10
Kms and the main source of water is traditional river
wells. The distances
within the mixed farming livelihood zones are slightly less
– 3 Kms return distances. The trend is not normal.
Rampant
incidences of coughing, sneezing and Malaria among the
children were reported during the month in Mwingi District.
Most
low income households have consumed their recently
harvested maize/bean crops and are currently selling sheep
and goats to sustain their domestic food requirement. |
The "Wells for Africa"
campaign organised by Sheila O'Malley and Gerry Jones has
now raised funds for water projects serving almost 3000
people in Kitui. The first two wells constructed are shown
here (right). As of April 2007, a further three sub-surface
dams are nearing completion.
