How you can help the people of Kitui...............

Are you in the Printing Business? In a Diocese like Kitui, covering a very wide area with low population density, limited infrastructure and difficult travel conditions, effective communications are vital. The Diocese of Kitui wants to upgrade the capability of it's communications office, which serves a huge variety of needs from training course material, parish bulletins, through to materials for schools and medical centres.

At the present time the Diocese operates an old Gestetner 211 printing press, shown here.

We will be shipping a consignment of equipment and machinery for capacity building in the Diocese of Kitui later this year- around April or May.

So if you can donate a more up-to-date printing press than that currently in use, please contact us.

Are you in the Engineering Business? The Diocese of Kitui operates a workshop in the Diocesan headquarters in Kitui. This workshop was originally set up and run by Fr. Barratt in 1986, one of the Kiltegan Fathers. Unfortunately due to cash constraints, plus the death of the founder, the workshop facilities have deteriorated.
Welding Equipment.jpg (36628 bytes) A considerable demand exists for fabrication of sttel structures and for repairs. Items such as steel frame beds for schools, window grilles, doors, chairs are routinely made. The welding equipment is, like all other equipment in the workshop, well beyond it's useful life. The existing workshop buildings are very suitable for development. For example, it has three vehicle inspection pits, and plenty of useful workshop, office and storage space.

There is a real opportunity here to build much-needed capacity in Kitui, and for regenerating the wonderful work commenced by Fr Barratt.

We intend to re-establish the workshop as a capacity building operation within the Diocesan structure- not only to provide an in-house service for Diocesan and Parish needs, but also as a source of income generation by providing basic engineering services to the district. There are no engineering businesses in Kitui. By providing this capacity, the opportunity exists to train young men and women in a trade for which there will be constant demand in the area.

Battery Charger.jpg (32792 bytes) Batteries for vehicles are another high cost item. The charging and battery testing equipment is sorely in need of replacement.
Pillar Drill & Bench.jpg (40555 bytes) Workshop facilities are basic, with only one elderly pillar drill, and one hand drill- both in need of constant repair. We are looking for any usable engineering equipment suitable for a light fabrication and repair workshop. In particular we want to get the following

1. Centre lathe with 1.2 metre bed minimum

2. Universal Milling Machine such as a Bridgeport

3. Pillar drill, 25mm capacity

4. MIG welders and Arc welders

5. Bench vices

6. Hand tools such as angle grinders, power drills

7. Sheet metal working equipment (manual) such as box and pan folder, guillotine.

Tyre remover.jpg (43789 bytes) Vehicle maintenance is an ongoing issue with the Diocese, due to the high cost of maintenance, coupled with the lack of paved roads. This trye fitting machine is in constant use.
So if you can donate suitable engineering equipment please contact us.

We would also welcome any offer of services to set up this equipment after delivery to Kitui, or for on-going training of the staff.

Other ways in which you can help:
We want to encourage your support, your enthusiasm and commitment to support the people of Kitui. Further projects will be added as current projects are completed. We hope that you will share our view the the situation of the people in these areas is not hopeless- far from it- and there is much we can do to help.  Your help can be in many forms- prayer, moral support and encouragement, attendance at the monthly coffee mornings, once-off donations, or regular contributions. You may feel you, or a group with whom you are associated,  can adopt one of the proposed projects and raise funds to see the project to a successful completion. For certain projects we would welcome specific technical or business skills. If you want to help, please contact us
If you are in a position to donate to one of our projects, our Donation Form allows you to select the specific project you would like to support.
