Friends
of Kitui Monitoring Visit- May 2008
All
12 of the current batch of projects (listed right) were
selected following a needs assessment carried out by
Jacinta Mutheu, Diocesan Water Officer, and a temporary
engineer employed by Friends of Kitui to assist on this
task. Initial budgets were prepared and compared with
similar costings from work carried out by another agency.
The budgets were approved by FoK and work commenced late
February.
Six
projects in Kyuso, including one on the mission compound,
were started late on April 17th due to some
difficulties in reaching procedural agreement between the
Diocesan Development Department and the the parish of Kyuso
These projects are on track for completion by early July.
The
remaining six projects in other parishes are also going
well and due for completion by end of June (This report
contains descriptions of two projects visited at Makongo
and Makayauni school).

Shallow wells
The
communities of Matia and Kimoini kya kati wells are in the
process of excavating the wells to attain the agreed 30
feet depth. The latter group is almost attaining the depth
where they are at 28ft whereas the former is at 14ft.Tools
were provided to Matia group who did not have good
condition tools to penetrate the hard formation. Deepening
of the Kimoini Kya kati well by a contracted artisan is in
progress while Matia well beneficiaries are themselves
continuing with excavation. (May 2008).
We have now embarked
on Kyuso parish projects and we have started with the
four wells of Mission, Kanini kaseo, Mutonyi and Katolo.
The project beneficiaries from the respective communities
have resumed their duties and are now stockpiling local
materials on the sites. Well deepening experts have been
engaged and are were to start early May.
Kanzuli and Nzouni
project beneficiaries were not very cooperative and
the projects took too long to be started. We are opting to
change these two with others where the community are more
cooperative and have even gone further with the excavation
and struck some water.

Sub-surface
dam
Makongo
sub-surface /sand dam is in progress. Initially a bit
delayed (it took time to coordinate the local community who
had to tend to their farms during the rains and could not
take full participation), this project was 75% complete
when we inspected the work on May 10th 2008. This project
is sponsored by 3Sixty Marketing, Gowran, Kilkenny

Kulukulu
Earth Dam
Kulukulu
earth dam is under construction by the community. Tools for
excavation were allocated to the community and technical advice
as per the design was also given. Members of the project group
work according to a roster where each individual is required to
excavate a given amount in a single day. The area received little
rains this season and the existing pan collected a relatively
small amount of water. This is an advantage because the community
will use the water to compact the dam embankment. Construction of
the seepage protection liner was planned to be done at the
initial stages, but may have to be postponed waiting for the
little water in the pan to drain. The work is a bit challenging
due to the current (late April) rains which have resulted to the
existing pan become filled up with water thereby slowing down the
work, and making the task very onerous..

| For
2008/2009 Friends
of Kitui will be supporting a number of water projects in
Kitui. An initial batch of 12 projects is under way, and we
hope to have identified a further 12 projects by early July
2008, so that work can continue uninterrupted. Each
project will have the potential for supporting 200 to 300 people by providing
them with a safer water supply, closer to their homes. For more background
information see the Water Issues page.
In outline, each water project we support will follow this profile:
1. It will be a project developed by an established community group in Kitui
|
2. It will have applied to the Diocese Water Department for support and will
have passed their review procedures to ensure eligibility and accountability
3. The per-project budget cost will be in the range €2000 to €5000
4. The community group will provide 50 to 60% of the total cost in the form
of local labour and locally sourced materials.
5. Each project will be reviewed on the ground in Kitui by a representative
of Friends
of Kitui at regular intervals.

The
Different types of Water Projects
|
|
Sub-surface dams
Technology that's 3000 years old, now being revived to meet the challenges of
recurring droughts. For more information on SSDs see the Water
Issues page. SSDs identified for support in 2006/2007 are
listed here.
|
Shallow Wells
Properly constructed wells to replace ad-hoc water holes scooped out of sandy
river beds will improve access and yield, and protect water from contamination.
For more information on Shallow Wells see the Water
Issues page. Wells identified for support in 2006/2007 are
listed here.
|
|
Rock catchments
If the nearest water course is too distant, rock catchments can capture a
high percentage of precipitation/ rainfall and serve as a reservoir. For
more information on Rock Catchments see the Water
Issues page. Catchments identified for support in 2006/2007
are listed here.

Storage Tanks
Tanks to store rainwater run-off from roofs of buildings are a most
important source of good quality drinking water |
