| This
is the fourth round of an ongoing
programme, commenced in 2006, for the provision of clean
water to marginalized communities in Kitui, Kenya. Kitui is
always considered “food insecure”- that is, the
majority of the population are not able to grow sufficient
crops or raise enough livestock to provide an adequate diet
for their own families. This year
the situation has reached crisis point, because after three
years of successive drought, near-total crop failure
occurred after the failure of the November/December rains.
(For more detail on the food security situation see our
April Newsletter ).
Our water harvesting
projects are based on very simple technology such as
hand-dug “shallow” wells (which may be up to 30 metres
deep), rainwater collection systems with storage tanks, and
sand dams which store flood water in dry river beds. |
Our
first programme commenced in 2006 with 8 projects, was
followed by 12 projects in 2007, and 17 projects in 2008.
All of these projects have been funded in their entirety by
individual donations and by community and school
fundraising efforts.
The projects listed below will commence
July/August 2009, for a 12 month programme due to be
completed around July 2010. For this new round, we have
extended the programme to include sanitation facilities.

harvesting structures can be found on our Downloads
